When the owners engaged Katie in 2018, they had been living in the one-story home on the property for 8 years, long before starting their family.  They adored the neighborhood and the charm of the original 1940s home, but now with three little boys and two lively beagles, they were busting at the seams.  A remodel and addition to the original house were explored, but given several challenges, ultimately it was decided to design and build a new custom home.  Foremost, the original house was positioned far back on the lot, so a new build allowed the opportunity to bring the house forward to the current front building setback line and gave the owners a larger backyard for their boys and beagles to play.

The style of the new two-story home was based on the owner’s love for classically styled colonial architecture. The floor plans stayed true to the traditional style as well with defined rooms, symmetrical windows with divided lites, a central staircase in the entry, and traditional architectural details throughout such as arched openings, wainscotting, and trim details.  Painted brick was chosen as the exterior material with soldier course window and door headers, exposed rafter tails, and a traditionally shaped curved metal roof on the front porch.  At the back of the home, a large screened-in porch and a balcony on the 2nd floor also added to the traditional detailing and made great spaces for the family to enjoy their new larger backyard.  The finishes, fixtures and cabinet details implemented by Martha O’Hara Interiors were harmonious with the architectural detailing and in keeping with the classic style but with a fresh vision, and together with Olsen Defendorf, the team was able to deliver the owner’s dream of a new, traditionally styled home in which to raise their family.
